LUNG CANCER IN PIMPRI CHINCHWAD Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that forms in the lung's tissues, usually in the cells that line the air passages. It's the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and is often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are limited. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 85% of cases. However, nonsmokers can also develop lung cancer. Other causes include genetic damage to the DNA of cells in the airways, or inhaling damaging chemicals. The two main types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These types are diagnosed based on how the cells look under a microscope. Symptoms of lung cancer include: Shortness of breath Lung cancer can block or narrow an airway, making it difficult to breathe, especially after climbing stairs or performing a task. Cough A persistent cough that doesn't go away is a sign of non-small cell lung cancer. Fluid in the chest Lung cancer can cause fluid to accumulate in the chest cavity, which is called pleural effusion. This can also cause shortness of breath. Other symptoms Other symptoms include repeat chest infections, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, bone pain, eyelid drooping, facial paralysis, hoarseness, joint pain, nail problems, shoulder pain, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the face or arms, and weakness. Some people have just one symptom, while others have several.
