Liver cancer, also known as hepatic cancer, is a disease that occurs when cells in the liver grow out of control. It can be primary, meaning it starts in the liver, or secondary, meaning it spreads from another part of the body to the liver. The most common type of primary liver cancer in adults is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Symptoms of liver cancer are more likely to appear as the cancer grows or becomes advanced and may include: Weakness and tiredness Pain in the abdomen, right shoulder, or top right side of the tummy Swelling of the abdomen due to a build-up of fluid (ascites) Appetite loss and feeling sick Weight loss Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) Pale bowel motions Fever Treatments for liver cancer may include: Cryoablation: An instrument is used to freeze and destroy cancer cells. Electroporation therapy: Electrical pulses are sent through an electrode placed in a tumor to kill cancer cells. Targeted drug therapy: Treatments that focus on specific abnormalities present within cancer cells to cause them to die. Some ways to reduce the risk of liver cancer include: Getting the hepatitis B vaccine as a newborn Treating chronic hepatitis B infection Reducing exposure to aflatoxin B1 by replacing foods that contain high amounts of it with foods that contain a much lower level
